The Shucked Oyster Band
The opening picture is what happens when another band comes in for a drink where you’re playing. But this wasn’t just another band, they were Rusted Root & friends! Photo provided by Legacy Lens Productions, thanks for the great pic!
Who and what is TSOB?
TSOB is – Gary Moore singing lead vocals and playing rhythm guitar, Dave Renz playing amazing saxophone fills/solos, Ray Migneco with great lead guitar licks and all around cool lead noodling, and Ben Smyth, our fantastic drummer and percussionist extraordinaire!!
The Shucked Oyster Band (TSOB) plays an eclectic mix of tunes, in a “bluesy” kind of style. We team up each gig to play great light acoustic style versions of cover tunes from the 40s to today, adding our own flair, some grit in the vocals, along with plenty of sax and percussion solos. Our goal is for folks to have fun and enjoy the evening along with us!!
Sometimes we play from a previously picked set list, but more often than not, we play by whatever seems to fit for that moment. We “oysterize” each song so that even though you recognize it, the song takes on a new feeling when you hear it.
Our sets include great songs from the following artists:
Bill Withers, Joe Bonamassa, Kaleo, the Beatles, Ray Charles, John Legend, Nina Simone, BB King, Ben E King, U2, Eagles, Johnny Cash, Don Henley, Muse, Imagine Dragons, Goldford, Ray Charles, Bob Moses, Daughtry, George Michaels, U2, Phillip Phillips, Adele, Robert J. Walsh, Johnny and the Low Downs, and these are just of few of the artists whose songs we play!
TSOB can be anything from a solo act, to a trio, to our full quartet as needed depending on the venue, playing usually between 2-4 hours. We can either use our crisp, clear sound system or go fully acoustic, depending on your needs.
We are always joking that we’re the worst request band ever. The following picture is what happens when you tell someone at the bar that you don’t really do requests, but if they go our website and pick songs that are listed, we’d be happy to play them!
Upcoming Gigs
The thing is, with COVID, everything’s still up in the air a bit…
where we’re playing next,
So there are only a few scheduled gigs currently. Trust us though, we’re working diligently on getting more gigs. As already stated, COVID is playing havoc on our ability to book safely so you don’t have to worry about getting sick.
Of course with all that said, we’re confident that as things start to pick back up, our schedule will begin to fill up again.
But rest assured, we’ll let you know as soon as we do!
Where the heck did The Shucked Oyster Band (TSOB) name come from?
We get that a lot. Seriously, even we’d be curious if we didn’t already know.
The story goes something like this…
Scheduled for our first gig, we still didn’t have a name, and the venue didn’t even know how to advertise us, so they just said – Gary Moore and friends. Yes, my name is really Gary Moore, and yes I do like to play blues cover tunes, however, I am not “The Gary Moore”, the blues player, as sadly he passed away a few years back.
Obviously I’ve digressed, sorry.
Before we had a name, we’re there actually playing music as an un-named band and I ask if anyone has any names they’d like to offer. Nobody says anything. I start looking around and, low and behold, to my left is George & Sons Seafood Market (shameless plug for a great seafood spot located in Hockessin, DE) with a chalkboard sign that says “Shucked Oysters”.
The rest is history.

“I usually can’t take bar bands but after a great concert by Bert Lams/Tom Griesgraber at Kennett Flash we went around corner for quick drink at La Verona and heard a really fun band with original arrangements of songs you don’t usually hear in bars. The Shucked Oyster Band – aka Shucked Oysters <FB page> was a blast.”
